Trauma in Body Memory & Pain
Trauma in Body Memory
Body Stores Stress Series

Between 20% and 30% of the world population is estimated to struggle with pain that lasts over 12 weeks. (National Institutes of Health 2020-21)
Trauma in Body Memory & Pain
Do you have chronic pain? What about pain that comes and goes, depending on what you're doing, or the amount of stress you're experiencing?
Have you ever been surprised when you started feeling pain? And you can't remember an event that caused it?
Frequently, my massage clients had unexplained pain. And I helped them make sense of it.
Pain doesn't just happen. There's always a cause.
Here's an article 34 Surprising Causes of Pain, about how sometimes doctors aren't able to identify clear causes. (www.painscience.com/articles/surprising-ways-to-hurt.php)
Here's a different way to look at it. One that most doctors don't consider.
Physical and non-physical traumas occur every day. And all of it imprints on your body.
Ultimately, the accumulation of stored stress and trauma is the 'cause' of pain and all of your body's imbalances.
Pain grabs your attention. Because of it, you have an opportunity to focus on what is happening in your body and your life.

Physical Trauma in Body Memory
Look at poor Kermit. He's had a terrible accident. When the crutch and bandages are gone, the doctors will say he's completely healed.
Yet he could have headaches, or persistent symptoms of traumatic brain injury. And if he broke a leg or suffered whiplash, he might have pain, walking imbalances, or back and neck issues.
As mentioned in the video above, when you fold a piece of paper, never again can it return to being a 'new' piece of paper. This also happens with physical trauma. The tissues will never return to their original, undamaged state.
The body retains a memory of the trauma forever.
Fortunately, you can decrease the symptoms, perhaps even eliminating them.
Stress & Trauma in Body Memory
Non-physical stresses also store in the body, though there may not be an obvious memorable incident. They accumulate, layering trauma into the tissues over the course of months or years.
Please take note of the Stress Releasing Intentions below.

Stress
Stress is normalized, and you may not think of it as causing injury. But persistent stress contributes to 'overuse injury' as much as hand overuse leads to carpal tunnel syndrome.
Abuse & Emotional Trauma
If you've experienced emotional trauma or abuse, you know that tension, pain, and other physical symptoms can plague you, long after the injurious events have ended.

Stress Releasing Intention for Health & Healing
Throughout the Body Stores Stress series, I've offered practical ways to release stress and choose health.
Pain management strategies are everywhere. Look for practitioners, therapies, and exercises. Supplements and devices. Some may work for you, others may not.
If you experience significant or consistent pain, please contact your physician or other health care provider.

Practical Actions
First, if your doctor has recommendations, follow them!
Here are simple self care approaches that you may not have seen. Please know that it's still possible that you may experience no changes.
What is this symptom trying to tell you?
As mentioned above, one way of looking at symptoms is that they are how your body grabs your attention.
If you're not getting the message, then your body may have to start 'screaming' with worsening pain.
So ask your body, and ask yourself ...
- What's the message?
- Is your body trying to tell you something?
- Are you missing something important?
- What do you need?
What were you doing?
Frequently my massage clients had unexplained symptoms.
When I had them describe their recent activities, it all made sense.
- Lifting your bag into an airplane's overhead compartment.
- Cutting firewood.
- An intense workout or long hike.
- Tripping on the stairs.
- etc.
When you are mystified by your symptoms, it feels chaotic and out of control. You are at the mercy of unidentifiable forces.
When you have a logical explanation, things make sense. Perhaps nothing else changed, but with understanding, symptoms can be easier to manage.

Allow stress & tension to melt away
I mentioned this in previous posts in this Body Stores Stress series. And it merits repeating.
