What Matters Most?

When you were young, did you do things that you wouldn't dream of doing now?

Enjoying life was the top priority, and aging felt so far away. You took risks, and played hard in sports, recreation, and work. You ate and drank whatever you wanted, and perhaps smoked or used drugs.

Then one day reality hit. And you realized that those activities had taken a toll. Today, perhaps your body hurts and maybe your mind is struggling.

Ultimately, health matters most. And brain health claims the top priority. Because without your brain, nothing works!

Whatever you've done in the past, today's choices can help your brain.

You want your brain and memory to work well throughout a long and healthy life.

When is the best time to take care of your brain? Before you have compromised brain function. It's easier to prevent mental decline than to repair it.

However, if you already have signs of memory loss, have hope. It's possible to recover some or all of that capacity.

So start today. Whatever your health status, every positive action makes a difference.

Do You Fear Dementia?

People fear memory loss and dementia. Yet most do not take purposeful actions to protect brain function.

Are you forgetting things?

Throughout this Body Stores Stress series, I have asked this question. And no-one sends me messages, "Yes! That's me."

Because they don't want dementia, people pretend the signs of compromised brain function aren't happening.

"Over half (56%) of people are putting off seeking a dementia diagnosis for up to a year or more, a study carried out by Alzheimer’s Society has found. Dementia is the most feared health condition in the UK, perhaps explaining also why almost two-thirds of people surveyed (62%) felt a diagnosis would mean their life was over."

Neuroplasticity

School taught me that brain cells aren't replaceable. So I believed that when a neuron dies, it's just gone. Perhaps you still believe that. Fortunately, science understands differently now.

Your brain adapts and grows. Particularly when you are learning, your brain's capacity can increase.

Neuroplasticity depends upon formation of new connections or synapses between nerves throughout life, from birth to death.
