Breathe Yourself Through the Holiday Season

BREATHE.

Many people can hear in their minds the sound of my voice speaking that word to them. BREATHE. And they take a nice, deep breath. Sandra Lynn Lee

Taking a deep breath requires that you slow down. Your attention returns to yourself and to your body. You come into the present moment.

Paying attention to your breathing is extremely valuable during times when you are busy and/or experiencing a lot of stress.

Every cell in your body requires oxygen. Breathing massages your organs and supports them in functioning effectively. Deep breathing requires that the muscles around your torso both relax and contract, assisting them in releasing tension.

People tend to suppress their breathing when they are intently focusing on something. Shallow breathing limits the amount of oxygen that is available to your brain. Therefore, breathing more deeply will actually make it easier for you to concentrate and focus.

In our culture, "The Holidays" is a period of time that is pretty universally thought of as one when people experience a larger than average amount of busyness and an accompanying increase in stress.

Many people have heard about the importance of paying attention to their breathing, and that it is valuable to take deep breaths as a way to both manage stress and maintain health.

The place where they get stuck is remembering to pay attention. When you have been at your desk for three hours, with all of your attention absorbed by the project you've got to finish, do you notice the pain in your neck? When you are tending to the cooking of five different food items, do you realize that your shoulders are in your ears, then relax them? When you are racing around doing errands, do you remind yourself to stop and breathe?

So, how do you remind yourself to pay attention to breathing and how your body feels? Would you like some suggestions?

Do you have my business cards? Many of my clients post these Breathe cards in a variety of locations to remind themselves to pause in their activities and breathe. One client told me that all four of her office mates had my cards posted on their computer screens. Good places for the cards are the visor of the car, the refrigerator door, the bathroom mirror, next to the telephone, really anywhere.

Perhaps you don't have my business cards, or you don't want to use them for this purpose. Try sticky notes or colored sticky dots. You can use anything that will remind you to pause what you are doing and take a deep breath.

I downloaded a free software program that has a timer. At regular intervals, it reminds me to pause and breathe. Find these programs at http://www.download.com.

I have an electronic handheld organizer. I put messages in it for myself and tell it to repeat the messages every day.

You could take a deep breath every time you perform a particular activity, such as washing your hands. Look at yourself in the mirror, smile, and breathe. It becomes a ritual of self care.

Create an intention. Tell yourself something like this. "I will pause and breathe deeply when I, . . ." You could write this intention down and post it as a reminder.

Coming Soon -- Pocket Sandra

Years ago, one of my clients said, "I wish I had a Pocket Sandra." If you have done SOMA with me, you probably remember me saying, "Walk with your psoas," or talking you through a grounding exercise. So, perhaps you can relate to this person's desire to have me there to remind you.

I will be recording audio files for you to download. Ultimately, each of these newsletters will be accompanied by an audio. And I will have audios specifically intended for people who are doing SOMA, or who have already completed SOMA. These will feature particular things for you to pay attention to, and exercises to support you in living more fully in your body.

Recently, I was telling a client about Pocket Sandra. She plans to download a picture of me, and the audio files onto her electronic organizer. So, she really will have a Pocket Sandra.
